Jeffery Said:

Does anyone have any ideas for an environmental science project?

We Answered:

1. Build a model demonstrating how the waste from a hog farm gets into the ground water and eventually into a river 1/2 mile away.

2. Build a model demonstrating the life span of various materials in a landfill (plastic bottles, magazines, newspapers, glass containers, etc.) vs the life cycle of the same materials if recycled.

3. Build a model demonstrating common household products vs their "greener" alternatives.

4. Build a model demonstrating the lagoon-spray system of sewage treatment vs the conventional chemical-plant system of sewage treatment.

Unique Environmental Science Fair Project?

We Answered:

One of the hotter trends in environmental studies right now is "sustainability". This is the case in many industries but a lot of it leads back to some sort of environmental science. Since you are only in middle school, consider the following topics:

-Carbon Footprint or Virtual Water Footprint of Common Household Items (there's a lot more to producing things you find in your house than just going to the store and making a purchase)
-Global Water Crisis & Agriculture (A growing human population calls for greater water needs, and irrigation for farming is the number one use)
-You could research ways to make your own school more environmentally friendly
-"Will water be the next oil?" (something to consider)
-Plastic bags and the disappearance of marine life (our consumption of plastic and disposal has created a plastic "soup" in the seas)

These are just a few, hope you like one, I could go on forever..

What is a good science fair project for environmental engineering?

We Answered:

Put a solar panel on the robot. Use the controller for the robot to make it move around using the suns energy. Say this should be the use of energy for cars, making them run by electricity. If they ask about nighttime, give the example of a glow-in-the-dark magnet. It gathers the energy it needs during the day. uses it at night. Also use the example about the terrible oil spill in the gulf of mexico thats going on right now. Say that would be abolished if we were to use an alternative energy source for our cars and machines, aka the suns energy.Don't know much about enviormental engineering, but I think this falls into that catagory. Not very original but good examples for it are here.
