4th Grade Science Fair

Tim Said:

I have to help my little sister with her 4th grade science fair?

We Answered:

Seeds and how they travel.
show different seeds; apple seeds, grass seeds, chinese chesnut seeds, coconut. Some float in water, some cling to animals legs, some float on the air - depending on where it is located a seed is designed to survive.

Please help me with my 4th grade science fair project?

This topic is a little harder than first meets the eye. Let's start by simplifying the problem.

How about if we ask how much liquid is in an apple?

Can you use the school's scale? If not, you can get a food scale for under 10 dollars at stores. I suggest a Jeweler's scale on Ebay if that is not possible. They are very accurate and they cost under 10 dollars. (But your apple cannot weigh more than 200 grams. I think that is pretty safe).

Weigh the apple.

Quarter it, but do it carefully.

Put it in the oven( I wonder if a microwave would work) and over bake it for about an hour at 200 degrees. Make sure your mom or dad is around unless you have been taught how to deal with very hot things like an oven. I'd try 4 or 5 apples with different times, but don't let the apple burn. You are destroying your experiment if the apple burns.

Weigh it again.

It will weigh a whole lot less. The difference is the liquid content.

Do you know how to figure out percents? Could you do it on a calculator? If you can, then figure out the percent liquid. That will take care of the fact that apples weigh different amounts. The percent liquid is about the same.

Now the next part of the procedure is where your sister is really going to pick up her marks. You have to see if you can actually separate the "apple juice" and the water. That's not easy, especially at this level. Buy some unsweetened apple just. Put a small amount in a glass and let it evaporate. If there is something left, then you can separate the apple juice further. If there is nothing left, then you can't go any further. But your sister will get good marks for saying that it either is or is not possible.

If you can go further (there is something left in the bottom of the "empty glass" then try separating the liquids with a coffee filter. If it doesn't work, it doesn't matter. At least she thought of it.

Summary
=======
1 Weigh a dry apple.
2. Put the apple in an oven for 1 hour on a pan.
3. when the apple cools weigh it again.
4. Subtract the lighter weight from the heavier one. (step 3 from step 1).
5. Figure out the percent liquid.

Formula
======
Weight of Apple before going into the oven
Subtract
Weight of Apple after going into the oven
equals
Divide
Weight of apple before going into the oven
equals
times
100
equals.
These percents should be about the same for every apple.

6. Let some unsweetened apple juice evaporate. Note what's left if nothing you are done.

7. If there is something left then filter the apple juice. What comes out of the filter should be closer to water.

Problems
========
I think you are a wonderful sister for helping out your sister. Very few would. I will try and help you any way I can to do this as well as you can and I'm sure others will feel the same way. Don't hesitate either to post again if you run into trouble or email some of the people who answer you.

Good luck. You got some very fine answers. You could use the first answer (blender) and this one to see which one gives you the most liquid content.

Is The Moon a good choice for 4th grade science fair project, the topic is Solar System?

We Answered:

To answer you question: Yes, the moon appears bright because from light reflected from the sun. The moon does not produce its own light.

But I'm not so sure the solar system is the right subject for a 4th grade science fair project. Don't you have to develop a problem then create and experiment to test your hypothesis? I don't understand how a 4th grader could possibly create such an experiment dealing with the moon.

There are websites that have tons of great science fair experiments for students.

i need help with my cuusin's 4th grade science fair project any help on that?

We Answered:

i'm a freshmen and someone did this in my bio class for the science fair, i guess it would wow the teacher since a fourth grader wouldn't think of doing this ever but it's how different soda effects your teeth

use eggshells as the 'teeth' and put them into different sodas for a few days
then take em out and record your data
then leave them for another few days and record your data again

haha :)

Mold is a type of fungi, which is similar to plants. Since it is a living creature, water encourages it to grow moreso than if it was dry.
