Does anybody know where to get this article online?

We Answered:

Hi, finally found a possible answer to your problems. It was published in Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, 12, 167-176. Chipman, L. (1966). The effects of selected music on endurance.

I signed in with the JSEP (free) on their website and searched it. It only had limited back issues, but there was a link to request that article at the top. (Not all older past issues are available for most journals.)

The paper has been cited in many other papers, too. Type in Chipman in your search engine and you'll have loads of resources for your project.

Good luck!!

(I will try at college tomorrow, they have really good resources, including old hard copies of journals. If I am successful, I can scan it and email it to you. No promises! I would love to read your paper when you have finished!!)

Should I continue my education?

We Answered:

Full Sail is expensive and has a mixed reputation. I'd have you see if you can find a way to break into the industry first, and consider the education as a second option.

It's not necessarily education or connections that'll get you a job in this industry. Connections are very helpful, absolutely. However, you needn't have majored in anything related to the industry in order to work in it. More important would be your work experience - internships, work done for clubs, etc. Through that, you can build a convincing story.

Have you done anything in the music business while you've been studying? I strongly suggest that you get involved on campus and off, as much as you can, to build a resume and some contacts, starting immediately.

Right now, this very minute, I want you to look at every radio station and record company and etc. local to your university and apply for their internships asap. Start with their websites, and if you don't see anything, contact them directly (and even if they say they don't have anything, send them your resume anyway). You really, really want to have done an internship in this field in order to make yourself at all employable - and that's in addition to any work you do related to the field on campus. And if the internship is you making photocopies, so be it, it'll still help.

If your university offers *any* music business related courses, take them this year.

Start to beef up your resume now, and you'll be better prepared for that move to Chicago. Once you're there, if you can't find a job in the industry right away, take on another job to support yourself while you do unpaid work in the industry. Over time, build experience so you can transition from unpaid to paid.

If you do decide that further education will benefit you, help you get where you want to go, or help you break in, see if a local college offers something. If you go to school locally, it's more likely you'll make connections - a lot of the teachers who teach these classes work, or worked, in the industry, and having such *local* connections would be of more benefit than going online to a school in Florida. Columbia College, in Chicago, has a reputation in this industry. Might be an option.
