Interior Design Education Online

Roland Said:

I want to be an interior designer, but it will be a career change...?

We Answered:

Congratulations on knowing what you want to do (at least at this point in your life). Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a short track to this profession. To be an interior designer, one usually needs a college degree and some additional training that can be gained during apprenticeship. Although you do have one, it is not in designing. However, it may be enough to get you where you need to be in addition to some of the training that is offered by some of the professional design schools (I can't be sure but you may want to make sure that you explore using as much your education as you can). Also be advised that 23 states and D.C. require licensure.

Check with some of the professional design schools to see what you can do. Also the median salary for interior designers in 2006 was about 43,000.

Good Luck on your career change. Be a little patient...you'll get there.

Can I create my own undergrad degree?

We Answered:

Let me just address your main question. Surprisingly, the answer often is "yes". Many institutions do have the option, within certain constraints, of letting students design their own programs. Very few do this, but the option can be there. "Individual studies option" or something like that is often the title. Usually it applies on courses within a single faculty so combining fine arts, science, humanities and business might be pretty tough. You need to do some homework in the college calenders to look for this. Good luck.

distance learning.....??

We Answered:

Personally I don't know about the interior design bit but I'd say go with what you love. I watched a show a few weeks back about a lady who makes her living sorting out peoples closets. So it just depends.

Here in the UK there are a lot of programmes on TV about getting into the property market, so someone could offer interior design services for those looking to sell after completion. So I just think it depends on the angle you're looking to pursue. You might have to create your own market by proving to people that they do need your service.

I'm doing a home course as well on Web design, who knows where that will take me. It beats trying to learn a profession I have no interest in just for the money. That's how you end up with people who hate their work.

Hope this helps just a bit.

Can I still become an interior designer if...and, what is the difference between interior decorator & designer?

We Answered:

I'll try to address all of these:

1. You need to pass the NCIDQ (National Coucil for Interior Design Qualification) exam to legally call yourself an interior designer. You can NOT pass this exam after taking only a few short online courses. The exam is given in 4 hour blocks and you will be required to do a great deal of space planning, problem solving, and hand drafting. You will also need to know a great deal about building codes.

It's also helpful to join ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) or at the least the IIDA (International Interior Design Association).

You will need to complete internships to see how a design firm really operates. You probably won't get paid for this, but the experience is invaluable.

2. As I said, you can't legally call yourself an interior designer. You can probably help your friends redecorate after a few classes, but decorating is NOT designing. Most interior designers will stab you with the nearest sharp object for calling them a decorator.

3. A decorator picks out paint colors, furniture, art, etc. A designer solves spatial problems and helps a space function better for the client. We know almost as much about building construction as architects.

4. I don't know if there's any such thing as licensing for interior decoration. Many people will at least get an Associate's degree and then specialize in residential design - which is almost entirely just "redecorating."

5. You will need years of classes, both in design and business, to start your own design firm. You'll also need tons of money and a backup plan in case your company fails... and it probably will. No offense. It's just that the number of new design firms that fail far outnumber the ones that succeed.
