Teaching Fractions
Edward Said:
Why did the state of Mississippi wants to remove the teaching of fractions from its curriculum? We Answered:
That cannot be. Without fractions, a cooking recipe would be impossible. Sounds more spoof to me like The Onion.Joshua Said:
If you are a 1st grade or K teacher: Do you think you will have to start teaching fractions and X's tables? We Answered:
No, I would be very surprised if that happened. I have taught in many schools and the earliest I have seen multiplication taught is grade 2 and I don't think fractions usually starts until about grade 4. Obviously, the concept of half and quarter is taught much earlier but nothing complex.Kids can't learn multiplication until they have perfected addition as multiplication is an extention of addition. Likewise, division is an extension of subtraction. Students are first taught addition and then subtraction. By the middle of grade 2, students are generally proficient enough in addition that they can begin multiplication.
Of course there are always exceptions and some students are ready for multiplication much earlier than their classmates. And of course, some students are not ready to begin multiplication until much later than grade 2.
To begin multiplication in kindergarten, students would first have to have a firm grasp on addition and subtraction and I don't this will ever happen.

teaching fractions?We Answered:
Well you could use manipulatives and props but honestly I think practice makes perfect so the props aren't going to help her solve the problems all that well. I think just getting common denominators is the hardest part so just give her lists of pairs of fractions and tell her to get the denominators the same for each pair. Thats the hardest part. And just practice practice practice. One class I was in, they had a worksheet every day throughout the whole year that they would do in the beginning of class and take it home if they didn't finish. It was multiple choice and usually it was on fractions. By the end of the year, most of the kids were saying it was easy. But fractions are hard! Good luck!Jared Said:
Teaching adding fractions help?We Answered:
Think of the numerator as the first name and the denominator as a last name of the fraction. Let them know that in fractions, you can only combine/add those with the same last name because you can put them over the same (common) last name. For example,
Robert/Smith + Will/Smith = (Robert + Will) / Smith
is like 3/4 + 1/4 = (3 + 1) / 4
