Subtracting Fractions

Wilma Said:

What are the steps to subtracting fractions with different denominators?

We Answered:

(a/b) + (c/d) = (a*d + c*b)/b*d

e.g
(2/3) + (7/13) = (26+21)/39 = 47/39

Seth Said:

When figuring out subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, how do you determine any common denominator?

We Answered:

common denominator could be found by taking l.c.m of those denominators.
Ex: 3 2/7 + 4 5/6
now we just add the whole number 3+ 4= 7
now we take 2/7 + 5/6
l.c.m of 7 and 6 is 42
2*6/7*6 + 5*7/6*7
12 +35/42
47/42
1 5/42
so the whole number 3 + 1 = 4
= 4 5/42
Hope I was clear

Subtracting fractions?

We Answered:

simply take LCM
LCM of 27 & 15 is 135 (27*5) & (15*9)
so (23*5-13*9)/135 = (115-117)/135 = -2/135 =

Subtracting Fractions?

We Answered:

Well first convert the mixed numbers to fractions:
3 5/7 is the same as 26/7

Then Find the Least Common Denominator between the two remaining improper fractions:
the LCD of 26/7 and 37/14 is 14; convert the first fraction to ?/14 ; then just subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.

26/7- 37/14= 52/14 - 37/14 = 15/14 = 1 1/14

subtracting fractions!!!?

We Answered:

You change the 1 to 4/4 then subtract the tops. 25 - 4 = 21
so 21/4 = 5 1/4 or 5.25
