Online Microbiology Course

Christine Said:

Which community college has the best biology program ?

We Answered:

I can't speak for California in general (sorry I'm a Brooklynite) but your best bet is to actually research the professors who teach there. First, you must find out who is adjunct and who is a full professor (one is basicly a temp teacher, the other hired to staff and usually better acredited) and do they continue to publish.

You will do better at a Community College afiliated with a University. For instance, many CC's in NYC are affiliated with the City University Program. That means, even if the professor teaches at a CC, he still has graduate students and does research.

Don't worry so much about the course offering. It's more important to get a good teacher than a variety of courses. A good teacher, with a good reputation and connections will help a good student out. Furthermore, every CC offers the basics at least which is much more important.

Do You Have ANY Suggestions?? *10 Points!*(:?

We Answered:

You are on the right track. My suggestion would be to look at each college's course work for the premed track and see how many of those classes you can take either as AP credits or at your local community college. Just be sure that the classes at the community college are sure to transfer. Another option is CLEP exams. Below are the links to the course work for some of the schools you listed and the list of CLEP exams.

Online nursing courses?

We Answered:

The only online classes (prerquisites for the nursing major) that one should consider taking are from a traditional college or university that offers the online courses. This consumer site has many posts by former students about those online, for-profit schools: http://www.ripoffreport.com and can search 'penn foster, ashworth, devry, ITT tech, capella, university of phoenix, kaplan and others.

For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

Accredited program in nursing: http://www.nlnac.org

For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search.

Am I On The Right Track? Help!?

We Answered:

This sounds all very amazing, and if you have time to fit more into your schedule here's some things I can think of.

- Volunteering to help at Day Camps (local Recreation Center)
- Habitat for humanity (check it out online, you can find a location near you where they're building a house.)
- Is there something like a SADD program? "Students Against Destructive Decisions" that you can join?
- Volunteer someplace like Soup Kitchens.

I hope these idea's help.
Good Luck! :]

What Else Should I Do?? Suggestions? **10 Points!**(:?

We Answered:

You are in a great place for the schools you mentioned. You've taken lots of AP classes, which is important for applying to top colleges (just make sure you get 4's or 5's on the AP tests); you've taken lots of courses that are geared towards a major in Pre-Med (which, keep in mind, is often not officially offered--many people planning to be doctors will major in Biology, Anatomy, or similar majors.) You have great extracurriculars. Don't add any more--colleges like to see you heavily involved in a handful of extracurriculars rather than sort of involved in a bunch.
Now you just need to do VERY well on the SAT or ACT and your SAT II (you should take one in the liberal arts--like English or History) and one in the sciences or math.
Good luck!

Can you become a Nurse Practitioner with an online degree?

We Answered:

Yes, you can do most of it online. You can do all or most of your nursing prerequisites online to start, then get your LPN in the course of one year. After that, find an online LPN to RN bridge program, then RN to BSN bridge, then BSN to MSN. The bridge programs require you to be working as a nurse as you go through their programs, so that you will gain experience and use that as your clinical site.
