Yes CLEP is a good way to go. Be aware that colleges have varying restrictions on accepting CLEP credit. There are schools that award credit for life experience. Northeastern Illinois University had a number of alternative programs when I was attending in the 90's.

Also, check the American Council on Education website link below. They are an agency that certifies educational non-credit alternatives.

I agree that you will probably need a lab component to complete a degree. Laboratory work is an essential component of scientific discovery, besides its fun!

Be careful in selecting your program, make sure that it is recognized by an accreditation agency, or you may find that other universities won't accept it. It would be a real disappointment to find you had a worthless degree, should you choose to go onto graduate work.

I also would like to stress that networking with faculty and other students is a great value should you wish to seek employment in the field. Personal recommendations and advice are valuable. It also adds to the enjoyment of education. "Misery loves company" they say (just kidding!). But friendship with fellow students is very motivational, and it is easier to study if your friends are doing the same.

Yes, you can. Although, you may be at a disadvantage to students who learn in a classroom setting because, you may be unable to dissect specimens or view microscope slides online. This is why labs are an integral component in learning biology or any other science.
